Oxidative stress can even come from doing something good such as strenuous exercise, and it is the only negative effect from exercise. This is called exercised induced oxidative stress.  Elite athletes have to be especially concern with the effects of this on their body.  Now, this does not give you a good excuse to get out of exercising, because the benefits of exercising far outweigh this one negative effect that can easily be neutralized, not to mention that not getting enough exercise also leads to oxidative stress (without any benefits)...So, there is no excuse!  You cannot have optimal health without regular exercise.  If you need some reassurance,

The antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables act as either missiles to destroy free radicals or as speed bumps to greatly slow them down. These “speed bumps” are vital for a healthy body.

Before you can understand antioxidants and their role, you must first understand free radicals (or oxidative stress).  Oxidative stress is essentially an imbalance between the production of free radicals (oxidation) and the ability of the body to counteract or detoxify their harmful effects through neutralization by antioxidants.

Oxidative stress comes from a number of things we do or we are exposed to all day long.  This could be the toxins in the food we eat, the beverages we drink (especially sugary drinks, caffeine, and alcohol), and the air we breathe.  Unhealthy habits such as smoking and drug abuse causes enormous oxidative stress), as well as normal day to day stress that we do not take measures to neutralize.

IMPORTANCE OF ANTIOXIDANTS

HOME PAGE

Raw fruits and veggies are loaded with all kinds of antioxidants.  The various rainbow of colors in produce (reds, oranges, yellows, greens,  blues, and purples) represent different types of antioxidants.  It is important to eat a wide variety and large quantity of this rainbow of colorful produce each and every day, because every day each cell in the body takes at least 10,000 hits of oxidation, causing the body to age and causing damage to the cells.  If you have a lot of oxidative stress in your body, you are at more risk for degenerative disease.  Antioxidants are what protects your body from these oxidative "hits."

Think of antioxidants as a team of body guard for your cells. It is easy to understand if you think of them like the President's personal team of body guards taking a bullet that was meant to bring harm to the President.  The President represents the cell.  The bullet is the free radical (or oxidation meant to cause harm to the cell), and the antioxidants are the team of bodyguards working together to protect the President (or your cells).  The more antioxidants you put in your body on a daily basis, the more they are able to slow the aging process (prolonging or producing less grey hair and wrinkles), to repair cell damage that has already taken place, to prevent further cell damage from occurring, and to lower your risk/prevent degenerative disease, to name a few.  Think of an apple when it is cut and exposed to air, it starts to brown and shrivel.  This is another example of oxidation.

By the way, cancer (very simply stated) is often an enormous amount of oxidation that was not neutralized, and over time, caused cell damaged to enough cells in the body to warrant a cancer diagnosis.  We all have damaged cells in our body, but the key is to take steps to keep the number of those damaged cells to a minimum, and to repair those cells that are damaged.  Cancer is not the only disease that is caused by oxidative stress that is not neutralized.  Oxidation can cause Diabetes and chronic fatigue syndrome, as well as many diseases of the heart, eyes, skin, kidneys, joints, lungs, brain, and immune system, to name a few.

As you can see from this illustration, when there are more free radicals than there are antioxidants to neutralize them, there will be more cell damage rather than cell repair.

Likewise, if the scales were tipped in the opposite direction with a greater supply of antioxidants than free radicals (oxidative stress), there would be more cell repair taking place rather than cell damage.

This is why it is very important to consume a large quantity and a wide variety of fruits and vegetables every day.  The latest recommendations are to consume 9-13 servings of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables (preferably raw) each day.  If you are unable to do this on a daily basis, we can help you with some better strategies to incorporate more produce in your daily regimen.  Reach out to us at the Highway 2 Health, and select "Fruits & Veggies" for the subject bar.
